This course for complete beginners is modelled on credit-bearing module LAN301. Successful completion of Fast track 1 gives right of entry to credit-bearing module LAN302 (Spanish 2). This course requires regular work and regular attendance. It includes a third hour of online work per week and optional assessments on a pass or fail basis.

To accommodate students dining in halls and learners who might be coming from outside Loughborough, the first 15 minutes of each session will be devoted to practice using what was learnt in the previous session, and any new content will be taught from 18:45 onwards.

Runs Monday 9th October - Monday 11th December 2017, with additional hours for optional assessment mid-course and in the second week of January 2018.

The price of the course will be added during the registration process.

Aims

  • To provide non-specialist learners with a basic knowledge of the language.
  • To develop practical communicative competence and basic cultural competence.
  • To encourage simple thought patterns in the target language. 

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and use basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary.
  • Communicate in simple sentences about topics such as talking about yourself, home and family, daily routine, leisure and eating out.
  • Be able to distinguish and describe key features of language structure such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns.
  • Acquire a basic knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and grammar including the present tense, articles, genders, adjectives and agreement.
  • Ask and answer simple questions about topics learned in class, understand simple recordings and texts.
  • Organise self-study; work in teams for role-play; develop confidence in approaching a new culture and reflect on cultural differences and similarities.

Content

  • Work is generally topic-based and follows Units 1-4 of the course book (Foundations Spanish 1, Palgrave Macmillan).
  • Areas covered in this module include greetings, personal introductions, family, home, daily routine and free time, looking at cultural aspects throughout. There will be regular role-play activities, listening practice and reading comprehension.
  • Individual practice of grammar exercises.
