Japanese Level 2 2021 - Part 2

This 10-week course forms Part 2 of the Japanese Level 2 course. It will be run entirely online.

Please note the description below covers the content of the full 20-week course.  Your teacher will provide further detail on what will be covered in these 10 weeks in due course.

Expected class size is 10 to 15 participants.

Teaching comprises 2 x 45 minutes (with a 10-minute break in between) per week for 10 weeks and guided independent study materials online.

Course Dates: Wednesday 9th February 2022 to Wednesday 30th March 2022 and Wednesday 4th May to Wednesday 11th May 2022, 6:00pm - 7:40pm.

Loughborough University uses Microsoft Teams for interactive live classes. You will need a good internet connection, a microphone and a camera to fully participate in the classes.

Course Description

This course is designed for students who have completed the first 10 weeks of the course. 

However, if you are joining late you will be given access to materials from the first 10 weeks and a short introduction (video/in writing) on how to use the learning platforms.

This course assumes that learners have previous basic knowledge of the language, such as verbs (- masu form) and their conjugation with appropriate particles, and adjective conjugation. Learners are expected to have had approximately 80 hours of previous study: 40 hours’ contact time and 40 hours’ personal study. In addition, Hiragana should have been mastered, and knowledge of Katakana is desirable. Learners are expected to have covered “Japanese for Busy People I” L1-14 or equivalent.

Level 2 introduces new grammatical structures and focuses on how to express topics relevant to daily life, such as inviting/suggesting someone to do something together, asking favours of people (imperative form), asking for permission, etc. The course also introduces cultural aspects in order to understand the background of the language and people. 

Some of the topics covered are:

  • Giving and receiving things
  • Invitations, suggestions, requests, giving and asking permission, etc.
  • Giving and receiving directions
  • Giving negative requests
  • Telling people your state
  • Telling people’s and your skills and preferences. 

On completion students will be able to:

  • Say what you are doing and where you are working
  • Invite people to do things together
  • Find the way to where you want to go
  • Tell people what you would like to do
  • Forbid people to do something
  • Make requests in a hotel, restaurant, taxi, etc.
  • Talk about your skills and interests
