A signed single screen print entitled 'The Laundry' by the artist Emma Smith.

Lessons on Living provides a series of instructions developed as part of a series of practical evening classes investigating routines and behaviours within shared spaces. These instructions focus on three main domestic spaces titled The Kitchen, The Laundry and The Common Room. Produced as a series of 3, the prints can be bought either individually or as a collection. The series have been produced as a limited edition of 10 A3 screen prints on GF Smith Marlmarque paper.

 

Detailed Description

Lessons on Living was one of the outcomes of Public Domestic, an extended residency undertaken by Emma Smith, exploring the domestic environments of university life as spaces of exchange and knowledge production. The project was commissioned by Radar, LUA and developed in collaboration with academics from Social Sciences and the Design School.

Text reads:

  The Laundry is always warm. (1)
(2) Plan your loads.  
  Do your washing in the morning when no one else is using the machines. (3)
(4) Check for tissues and money.  
  Unfold everything, even socks. (5)
(6) Do up the poppers on your duvet so your pants don't get stuck inside it while washing.  
  Time it right. (7)
(8) Get your washing out when it is done.  
  The laundry is too expensive. (9)
(10) Take your laundry home.
