DescriptionLoughborough University’s Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH) Staff Network warmly invites staff, students, family and friends, and the wider community to help us celebrate our African/ Caribbean event: So, why not join us at Village Bar, and enjoy authentic African and Caribbean food and drink; live music; and much more! It will be held on Friday 21st June 2023 from 4:00pm to 10.00pm. This event also coincides with National Windrush Day on the 22nd June 2024, which marks the 76th anniversary of the arrival of the passengers of the ‘Empire Windrush’ to the UK. This gives us an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that the Windrush generation has made, and continues to make, in the UK.

Additional ItemsMore InformationThe event will feature: 5.00pm - Professor Sheryl Williams will open the event "Streets Paved with Gold," a one-man play by Victor Richards, delves into the African-Caribbean migration experience from the 1950s onward. Richards explores themes of hope, identity, and change against the backdrop of recent history, focusing on the collective experiences of Black British Citizens. The play, ideal for intimate settings, intricately weaves together the stories of individuals like Augustus Cleveland Johnson, who arrived in London in 1948 on the Empire Windrush. This significant event in British history, commemorates on Windrush Day on 22nd June, 2024, marks the 77th anniversary of the Windrush's arrival at Tilbury Docks, bringing the first 500 Caribbean immigrants to Britain. The play is a poignant reflection on courage, opportunity, and the pursuit of a brighter future, resonating with audiences worldwide. Music from DJ Gary Warner This event will also provide an opportunity to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the University gaining the Race Equality Charter (REC) award. A member of the REACH Staff Network will describe the amazing work that has helped to advance race equity during the past year.
