Japanese 1 Extra-curricular Course 2026-27 (3.30-5.20pm)Description20-week Japanese Level 1 course. In-person (Loughborough University Campus). Wednesdays, 3.30-5.20pm Wednesday 18th November to Wednesday 16th December 2026 (5 weeks) Wednesday 20th January to Wednesday 17th March 2027 (9 weeks) Wednesday 14th April to Wednesday 19th May 2027 (6 weeks) Open to anyone aged 18 years of age and over. The course is designed for beginners with little or no knowledge of the language. The course covers a variety of everyday situations such as: • introducing yourself and others Class work emphasises listening, speaking and practice of sentence structure; self-study consists of reviewing work done in class and practising language skills, as advised by the tutor. Writing and reading Japanese letters (Kana) are basically left to your self-study, using the handouts provided and with tutor’s support. Textbook: Japanese for Busy People Book 1 - Revised 4th Edition Kana (Japanese alphabet) version ISBN 9781568366203 or Romanised version ISBN 9781568366197 (Tutor will advise students which version to be used in the first class).

Japanese 2 Extra-curricular Course 2026-27Description20-week Japanese Level 2 course. In-person (Loughborough University Campus). Thursdays, 6.00-7.30pm. Semester 1 (weeks 1-11 term-time) from Thursday 1st October to Thursday 10th December 2026 (10 weeks - no class in week 7) Semester 2 (weeks 1-10 term-time) from Thursday 11th February to Thursday 6th May 2027 (10 weeks - no classes during the Easter break) Open to anyone aged 18 years of age and over. Japanese level 2 assumes that learners have previous basic knowledge of the language, such as Verbs (-masu form) and their conjugation with appropriate particles, and adjective conjugation and how they modify nouns. Learners are expected to have had approximately 80 hours of previous study: 40 hours’ contact time and 40 hours’ personal study. In addition, knowledge of Hiragana (reading & writing) is required, and knowledge of Katakana is desirable. Learners are expected to have covered “Japanese for Busy People I” L1-13, or equivalent. The course introduces new grammatical structures and focuses on how to express topics relevant to daily life, such as:
