Description20-week Japanese Level 1 course. In-person (Loughborough University Campus). Wednesdays, 6.00-7.50pm. Wednesday 18th November to Wednesday 16th December 2026 (5 weeks) Wednesday 20th January to Wednesday 17th March 2027 (9 weeks) Wednesday 14th April to Wednesday 19th May 2027 (6 weeks) Open to anyone aged 18 years of age and over. The course is designed for beginners with little or no knowledge of the language. The course covers a variety of everyday situations such as: • introducing yourself and others Class work emphasises listening, speaking and practice of sentence structure; self-study consists of reviewing work done in class and practising language skills, as advised by the tutor. Writing and reading Japanese letters (Kana) are basically left to your self-study, using the handouts provided and with tutor’s support. Textbook: Japanese for Busy People Book 1 - Revised 4th Edition Kana (Japanese alphabet) version ISBN 9781568366203 or Romanised version ISBN 9781568366197 (Tutor will advise students which version to be used in the first class).

Your email will be used to send you a receipt, inform you of any changes to the course (if a teacher cannot run a class, for example), remind you of important dates (start of course, end of course, start of next course) and to collect feedback once at the end of the course – this will help us improve future courses. We sometimes inform you of free events we run related to the language you are learning that might be of interest, while you are registered on the course. We don’t pass on your details to third parties or engage in marketing beyond letting you know when the next registration for a course opens after yours has finished. More InformationMicrosoft Teams will be used for course materials, class recordings, communication, etc. You will be added to the Teams channel using the email address you provide when registering. Attendance Regular attendance is vital to make progress with your course. If you fail to attend three or more classes without notifying your tutor or the Language Centre, you will be considered to have withdrawn. Your place may be offered to someone on the waiting list; no refund will be given. Refunds Before the classes start We always aim to be flexible and accommodate any requests but if for any reason you cannot join us, we can issue you a refund. Please email languages@mailbox.lboro.ac.uk. After classes start We hope you enjoy the course but if you change your mind, we will issue a refund if no more than one week of classes has taken place (subject to an administration fee of 10%). Do contact us as early as possible if your circumstances change. Cancellations The University reserves the right to cancel any course which does not recruit a viable number of students. A full refund will be given in this case, including where a first class may have been attended.
